Sewing & Fashion Contest

Registration Deadline:  March 8, 2012

  1. Youth must turn in Fashion Revue Personal Data Sheet at registration. 
  2. Youth must turn in their completed garment by 5 p.m., March 8 to be judged on construction.

Time: 6 p.m.

Location:  USU Extension Office

Eligibility: Grades 3-12

Team or Individual:  Individual only.

Description:  Contestants will be judged on construction, personal presentation, and interview responses. The contestant may choose to display or model the article they have sewn.

Categories:

Sewing – Display of project (i.e., quilt, baby dress, hand bag, etc) with a written commentary.
Fashion – Modeling the project (i.e., gown, dress, or jacket) while commentary is given.
 
Judging
50%   –   1) Construction
50%   –   2) Modeling or Display with commentary and interview
 
Interview: (Both those that display sewing projects and those that model will have an interview)
-          Be prepared to discuss your project in detail and answer questions from the judges.
-          Any additional information is welcomed to give the judges a good idea of your experiences with the project.

Display: (for sewing construction without modeling)
-          A table will be provided for the display of sewn items that will not be modeled. 
-          Contestant should briefly introduce themselves before interview.
-          Contestants will stand next to their item for the interview portion.
 
Modeling: (for modeling category)
-          Time limit of 1 ½ minutes
-          Contestant should briefly introduce themselves before modeling
-          Music will be provided
-          Contestant’s introduction will take care of any narrations
 
Introductions – Contestants can choose what he/she would like to tell the judges, but the following must be covered:
-          Why did you choose this article?
-          How do you plan to use it?
-      If the pattern was changed, how?

Contest Orgainization:

  1. As youth will arrive for the contest, they will pick up their garment and, if modeling, change into their garment. 
  2. Youth will interview individually with the judges.
  3. While waiting to interview and model for the judges, youth will practice for the Fashion Revue and/or participate in a workshop/modeling seminar.
  4. After all contestants have been judged, the group will present a Fashion Revue for attendees. Awards wil be given after the Fashion Revue.  

 Score Sheet:  Youth will be evaluated based upon the following criteria: Fashion (Modeling) Catagory Scorecard or Sewing Catagory Score Card

Awards:  Each youth receives a certificate and earns a blue, red or white ribbon based on the Danish judging system:

·          Blue (excellent): 90-100 ($3 clover bucks)

·          Red (good ): 75-89 ($2 clover bucks)

·          White (fair): 74 and below

Next Steps:

  • County youth in 9th-12th grades who earn a blue ribbon in the county contest will be invited to compete during State Contests in July.
